Some do it to entertain at parties, others to fulfill childhood dreams, and some to normalize LGBTQ+ culture in a society that still struggles with acceptance. In some cases, cross-dressing has even sparked relationships, with couples bonding over the shared experience.
One salon reported welcoming nearly 400 customers in just a single month, with weekends bringing in at least 10 clients daily. The trend is growing, and while it reflects Japan’s deep creativity and openness to unconventional lifestyles, it also highlights a troubling truth: fewer men are choosing traditional paths of marriage and family.
It is this paradox that leaves many observers with mixed feelings. Japan is a land of beauty, discipline, and innovation — but also of solitude, fantasy, and demographic decline.
